SPACE REPORT #03: THE EARLSFIELD APARTMENT

Creating a Working Corner in a Compact Apartment

A compact apartment in Earlsfield with soft natural light, full-height balcony doors and just enough room to make everyday life work comfortably without feeling overcrowded.

Claire had recently moved in after spending months looking around southwest London for somewhere that felt bright, practical and still connected to the city without stretching the budget too far.

The apartment wasn’t large, but it had the things that mattered most — good light, a calm atmosphere and enough flexibility to settle into properly over time.

Like a lot of people working hybrid schedules now, Claire spends a couple of days each week working from home.

The difficulty wasn’t finding somewhere for a desk to physically fit.

It was finding a way to work from home without the apartment starting to feel like an office.

The Challenge

The main living space already needed to do several jobs at once.

It’s the living room, the dining space and the route out toward the balcony, all within a fairly compact footprint.

A larger desk would have immediately made the room feel more crowded and more work-focused, especially during the evenings when the laptop is closed but still sitting there in view.

The apartment didn’t need a full office setup.

It just needed a smaller place to sit comfortably and work for a few hours during the day without disrupting the rest of the space around it.

Space Agent Recommendation

Rather than trying to create a separate workspace, the approach here was simply to make one corner of the apartment work a little harder.

Positioning the Mini Jonah Desk beside the balcony doors allows the workspace to benefit from natural light during the day while still sitting quietly within the room itself.

Its compact footprint keeps the space feeling open and easy to move through, which matters far more in smaller apartments than people often realise.

The warm wood finish helps the desk feel softer and more relaxed within the room rather than overly functional or office-like.

Adding the Piccadilly Lamp changes the atmosphere again in the evening.

During the day the corner works as somewhere practical to sit and focus. Later on, the softer light helps it settle back into the apartment more naturally so it still feels like home once work finishes.

Nothing here feels overly styled or permanent.

It’s simply a compact setup that fits comfortably into everyday life.

The Result

The apartment still feels light and open.

The balcony doors continue to pull natural light through the room, the circulation space stays uncluttered and the working corner feels integrated rather than separate.

The desk gives Claire somewhere consistent to sit and focus during the day without dominating the apartment afterwards.

And because everything feels proportionate to the room itself, the space still feels calm by the end of the evening.

It’s still a compact London apartment.

It just feels easier to live in.
