TV Unit Size Guide

Choosing the right TV unit is mainly a question of width.

As a general rule, the furniture should be wider than the television. This creates a more balanced appearance and prevents the screen from visually overpowering the furniture beneath it.

Recommended Furniture Widths

TV Size Recommended Furniture Width
Up to 43" 90–120cm
50" 120–140cm
55" 140–160cm
65" 160–180cm
75" 180cm+

Important

Televisions are measured diagonally, but furniture must accommodate the actual width of the screen and any stand or feet.

Always check the dimensions of your television before ordering.

TVs Placed Directly On A Unit

If your television sits directly on the furniture, always check the dimensions of the TV stand or feet before ordering.

Some televisions have wide-set feet which require a wider surface than the screen width alone would suggest.

Wall-Mounted Televisions

Wall-mounted televisions provide greater flexibility.

Many customers choose storage furniture or sideboards beneath a wall-mounted television rather than a dedicated TV unit. This can provide significantly more storage while maintaining a clean appearance.

M&P TV Size Recommendations

Product Width Recommended TV Size
60cm Up to 32"
90cm Up to 43"
110cm Up to 50"
140cm Up to 55"
160cm Up to 65"
180cm Up to 75"

Using Sideboards Beneath A TV

A sideboard can often work just as well as a traditional TV unit, particularly where the television is wall mounted.

Many modern homes now use sideboards beneath wall-mounted televisions instead of dedicated TV units.

The main advantage is additional storage for media equipment, routers, cables, games consoles and everyday household items.

When selecting a sideboard for use beneath a television, the same principle applies: wider furniture generally creates a more balanced appearance.

Quick Rule

  • Up to 43" TV → 90–120cm furniture

  • 50" TV → 120–140cm furniture

  • 55" TV → 140–160cm furniture

  • 65" TV → 160–180cm furniture

  • 75" TV → 180cm+ furniture
