Creating a Guest Room People Actually Want to Stay In

A traditional semi-detached house in Jesmond, one of Newcastle's most established residential neighbourhoods. Tree-lined streets, independent cafés, local shops and easy access into the city have made it home to Nick and Ali for several years, while the village atmosphere around Osborne Road, Jesmond Library and The Lonsdale pub gives the area much of its character.

The guest bedroom sits at the front of the house beneath high ceilings and a large sash window overlooking mature trees. Like many spare rooms, it had gradually become a blank canvas — perfectly functional, but lacking the warmth and personality found elsewhere in the home.

Nick and Ali wanted to create a room that felt more welcoming for visiting friends and family. Somewhere comfortable to stay, with a calmer atmosphere and a stronger connection to the character of the house itself.

THE CHALLENGE

The room already possessed many of the qualities people look for in period homes. High ceilings, generous proportions and a large window provided plenty of natural light throughout the day.

The difficulty was that the room felt slightly cold and disconnected. A dark grey chimney breast created a strong focal point that dominated the space, drawing attention away from the window and making the room feel heavier than it needed to.

At the same time, the room lacked the layers of texture and warmth that help transform a spare bedroom into somewhere guests genuinely enjoy spending time. The challenge wasn't to reinvent the room entirely, but to work with what was already there and allow its best features to become more apparent.

THE APPROACH

The redesign began by simplifying the room's palette. The dark feature wall was removed in favour of a softer, lighter scheme that allows daylight to move more freely throughout the space and places greater emphasis on the room's original proportions.

A woven natural rug was introduced beneath the bed to add warmth and texture while helping to define the sleeping area. Soft linen bedding and sheer curtains maintain the room's light and airy feel without competing for attention.

Alongside the bed, a pair of Fresca Side Tables replace conventional bedside cabinets. Their compact footprint and lighter visual presence help keep the room feeling open, while the combination of walnut and marble introduces natural materials that sit comfortably within the overall palette.

On the opposite wall, a Century Chest of Drawers provides practical storage while adding balance to the room. Its warm timber finish complements both the bed frame and bedside tables, creating continuity without relying on a matching furniture set.

An olive tree beside the chest introduces a further natural element and creates a visual connection to the mature greenery visible through the sash window, helping the room feel more settled and complete.

THE RESULT

The room still feels unmistakably part of the original house. The high ceilings, large window and generous proportions remain the defining features of the space, and nothing added has attempted to compete with them.

Instead, the room feels warmer, calmer and considerably more inviting. The removal of the darker feature wall allows the natural light to become more noticeable, while the introduction of natural materials and softer textures creates a stronger sense of comfort throughout the space.

Most importantly, what was once a functional spare room now feels like a genuine guest bedroom — somewhere friends and family can relax, unwind and enjoy spending time when they come to stay.
